Sub Terra

In doing so, Sub Terra becomes an inhabited topography shaped by human presence, yet respectful of its natural context.

The spatial arrangement unfolds across three descending terraces, carefully oriented to frame the view, preserve privacy and establish spatial equilibrium between built form and open space. The configuration— consisting of a main residence and two guest houses—follows a rhythm of solids and voids. This choreography not only enhances environmental performance through natural light and ventilation but also embeds the architecture seamlessly into the landscape. Anchored into the hillside by linear stone retaining walls, the complex appears as a natural extension of the terrain.

At the heart of the main residence lies an atrium—a spatial void that mediates between earth and sky. Acting as the ‘lung’ of the home, the central living space draws in light and air, while private rooms orbit around it. The architectural narrative unfolds through a series of thresholds- semi enclosed courtyards and shaded terraces, that orchestrate a fluid and intimate transition between interior space and the surrounding landscape.

In addition, vegetation is not an afterthought but a foundational element. Intensive green roofs, planted with native species, restore the original soil profile, create microclimates, and contribute to energy efficiency. While rough-hewn local stone, exposed concrete, and untreated timber compose a palette rooted in geological and cultural continuity. Assembled with minimalist precision, these materials emphasize on texture, mass, and permanence, allowing the architecture to speak quietly but with conviction.

Ultimately, Sub Terra proposes a model of contemporary living—fostering a dialogue between the architecture and the land from which it emerges.
